What Is CA Intermediate?

CA Exams are undoubtedly considered to be one of the toughest exams in the country with vast syllabus and multiple subjects. Since you've landed here, you must have already cleared your Foundation exam or you must be a graduate or postgraduate thinking of starting your CA Journey.

Well, many students, on the basis of their experience at the Foundation level, start perceiving CA as a “not-so-tough” course. But mind you, the experience at the Intermediate level is altogether different from the one that you had at Foundation.

I am not trying to scare you rather making you realise that it is important to go through everything carefully and only then, you should take a well-informed decision to step ahead in the journey. After all, you are going to invest your efforts, time and dedication here.

Moving forward, I will discuss everything about CA Inter exams beginning from the registration process to the criteria of passing the exams, make sure to stay till the end to know all the details.

What is the eligibility for registration in CA Intermediate?

The following candidates are eligible for registration in CA Intermediate exams:

  1. Candidates who have passed their CA foundation exam ( the entrance exam)
  2. Commerce Graduates/Post-Graduates (with minimum 55% marks) or Other Graduates/Post-Graduates (with minimum 60% marks) (Direct Entry Route)
  3. Intermediate level passed candidates of Institute of Company Secretaries of India and Institute of Cost Accountants of India (Direct Entry Route)

Is there any difference between graduates/post-graduates and CS/CMA level-2 qualified students registering via Direct Entry Route? If yes, what is it?

Yes, there is a difference between the two. Graduates/Post-Graduates who fulfill the above criteria can appear for Intermediate only after completing 9 months of articleship whereas, CS/CMA (Level- 2) cleared candidates will have to appear CA -Intermediate exams and can commence articleship only after clearing at least one group.

What if a student is both a Graduate/Post-Graduate with a requisite percentage as well as a qualified CS/CMA level-2 candidate?

Such a student has a choice to enroll either through Graduate/Post-Graduate route or through CS/CMA route and accordingly, the procedure shall be followed.

Can existing CPT/CA-Foundation students on becoming eligible for the Direct Entry route convert to Direct Entry Scheme?

Yes, such students can convert to the Direct Entry scheme by paying Intermediate Registration fees only.

Can existing Intermediate students through CPT/CA-Foundation route, if becomes eligible for the Direct Entry route, apply for the same?

Yes, such Intermediate students will have to pay conversion charges of Rs 1000. They will have to pay fees for registration of the balance group, if any.

Subjects in CA Inter

Each group is for a maximum of 400 marks leading to a total of 800 marks for both groups.

A student can either choose to appear for both in a single attempt or one-by-one(in any order)

However, in both the cases, the passing criteria for exams shall be slightly different. (discussed in detail later).

When do examinations take place?

Under normal circumstances, exams take place two times in a year- In the month of May and November.

What is the passing criteria of exams?

A student is

Declared to pass both the groups simultaneously if,

  • Secures a minimum of 40% in each paper and minimum aggregate of 50% marks in aggregate of all the papers of each of the group, OR
  • Secures a minimum of 40% in each paper and minimum aggregate of 50% marks in aggregate of all the papers of both groups taken together.

Declared to pass a single group if,

  • Secures a minimum of 40% in each paper and minimum aggregate of 50% marks in aggregate of all the papers of that group.

Note: If you appear for both groups together and do not satisfy (A) and (B) criteria, but satisfy (C) criteria in one of the groups, you shall be declared Pass in that group and need not re-appear for it again.

EXEMPTION

When a student who appeared in all the papers of a group(s) and fails in one or more papers, but manages to secure 60% and above marks in any of the paper(s), such student is given exemption in respect of such paper(s) for the next three examinations.
