What Is RTP?

Revision Test Papers, a.k.a RTP, is released by ICAI for every attempt. It covers two things, one – latest amendments; and topic wise questions for revision purpose. Let’s talk about part A, i.e. Amendments, and now we know that our course goes through minor or major changes regularly, and the latest changes, keeping in my mind the cut-off date attempt wise, are included in the curriculum.

So you can think of this section of RTP as additional study material, which is absolutely important for your attempt. Amendments are asked in the exam and hence can’t be ignored. It would help if you also kept in mind the amendments that formed part of RTP for the previous 2 attempts as these are important areas, and a question from these topics can definitely be asked in the exam.

Coming to the second section, topic wise questions. Now RTP includes model questions which are for revision purpose. Practising these questions will increase your confidence level for exams. When you go through the solutions given in RTP, you will learn about the presentation of an answer which will help you write better answers in the exam.

Why Is RTP Important?

First of all, the biggest advantage of solving RTP is you get to know which topics are important, you get an insight on how prepared are you for exams and there have been numerous instances where the question from RTP was as it is asked in the exam. So, RTP should be considered as one of the most important question banks available.

Further, a common problem faced by students is how much to write in answers for subjects like Law and Audit, when you will go through the solutions given in RTP, you will understand all relevant points, provisions and sections you should quote while answering.

Another problem area is the presentation of practical questions and making working notes, so when you go through RTP, you will master the art of presentation and making working notes.

What Is MTP?

Generally, ICAI releases 2 series of MTP or Mock Test papers before every attempt. MTP is a model question paper, and it follows the marking scheme of the actual exam. The pattern is similar in the sense it covers MCQ or case study based MCQ for the subjects in which 30-70 pattern is followed. 

Further, it contains 6 questions, out of which 5 are to be attempted. Overall, it gives you an idea of how the real question paper is going to look like. MTP is generally easier than actual papers, so you can’t assume the difficulty level. Just consider MTP as practise papers and understand the exam pattern and marking scheme.

Why Is MTP Important?

Writing at least 2 MTP’s before the actual exam is very important. MTP is based on the marking scheme, and the pattern of the actual exam is followed so you will understand how to manage your time while writing exam, you will understand how you should use 15 mins reading time, and it will help you improve your writing speed.

It will be like a mirror for you, and you will be able to evaluate your performance because the standard of answer that is required according to the weightage of marks will be available for your reference. 

You will realize what you were able to recall and what skipped your mind in the case of theory subjects, in case of practical subjects, you will understand whether you are able to make proper working notes, or are you able to solve complex problems and in the case of subjects like DT/IDT and law where a lot of limits, fines, penalties and provisions are to be kept in mind while answering subjective or objective questions you will understand whether you are mixing up concepts or you can identify which sections to quote properly or not.

It would be best if you also awarded marks to yourself after you solve MTP, it will show you your weakness and strengths, and then you can change your preparation strategy as per your performance.

Difference Between RTP & MTP?

The basic motive of both RTP and MTP is to help you revise your course, and it helps you in performance evaluation.
