Guidance Regarding whether to go for Single group or Both Groups

2020 is one such year which everyone would like to delete from their lives. It has affected human beings so much especially the student’s community as its very tough situation when even after so many months of hard work, exams don’t happen and success gets delayed. ICAI cancelled July 20 examination vide notification dated 03rd July 2020.

Now, most of the students who were earlier appearing for a single group in July 20 might plan for both groups now which is good but the decision of single v/s both groups must be taken after planning on paper as emotions have no role to play when you are preparing for the toughest professional exam of the country. In this part of the blog, I would try to give some suggestions on whether to go for single or both groups a lot of students have this dilemma and this is based on personal experience. I have made some bad decisions as a student and thus would never want any CA student to make such a mistake.

You need to introspect to decide whether to go for single or both groups. You know your preparation and hence you are the best person to decide. Emotions or external motivation has no role to play in this very big decision. So, you have to decide although I would give some suggestions that might help you to decide as first you need to sort this single v/s both groups dilemma and then only you can plan for next 3 months. Some points that merit consideration:

1) How many subjects first reading/coaching has been completed as you must complete the first reading/coaching of at least 5-6 subjects by the end of July if you are aiming for Both groups. By first reading, I mean that you must have gone through all concepts/provisions once. This is common for those who appearing in Nov 20 for the first time and those who have appeared in CA Final/Inter in past/prepared for July 20.

2) Another important point would be your article ship status (CA Inter students may ignore this point). As we all know that July 2020 has been cancelled and students who were earlier on leaves for a single group and now attending office might get last 1-2 months of leaves. Such students must focus on that group only and not of both groups.

3) The number of sitting hours and effective study hours also have a role to play here as you know yourself best hence you must introspect whether you can handle the pressure of 7/8 subjects or not. Prepare a rough plan as planning always help and if the plan doesn’t look feasible then must stick to one group only.

The above mentioned are a few suggestions to decide whether to go for single or both. This decision would decide your future and hence decide after considering each and every aspect. Exam forms would be out of 5th Aug 2020 and you still have enough time to decide and once decided you must be firm with your decision.

There is new FASHION these days that students prepare for a group and a few papers of other group and aim for exemption in other group papers. I am strictly against such a strategy as ICAI gives 2 options i.e. either single or both groups and you must follow that only otherwise you will only be wasting time and energy.

Now let’s come to the main topic: 100 days study planner for CA NOV 20 Aspirants

100 DAYS STUDY PLANNER FOR CA NOV 20 ASPIRANTS APPEARING IN BOTH GROUPS

I have prepared this planner in such a way that this will allow you to complete 2 revisions till exams. You just have to start following from today itself. I have assumed the following points while preparing this planner:

1) If you are appearing in Nov 20 for the first time, then first reading/coaching of all subjects of CA Final must be completed by now or should complete by next week. By first reading, I mean that you have read the concepts/provisions once and it’s not like that you are picking up the subject for the first time now. At least some portion has been touched if not entirely.

2) You don’t have article ship pending or you are not working i.e. you will be at home studying for CA Final Nov 20 attempt for next 3.5 months

3) If you are a July 20 aspirant and if your other group coachings are going on then point 1 above is not applicable to you as you are already done with one group revision and hence you can use that time in completing another group coaching/first reading. You must complete all coaching’s by mid-august as your one group revision is already done.

Now let’s start the planning part in general for all!!

Number of Days left for exams: Approx. 100 Days (21st July to 31s Oct 2020)

Number of subjects: 7/8 subjects (Ignoring exemptions and if you have then it’s surplus)

Number of Revisions that must be done: 2 Revisions

I will divide the 100 days into 3 parts here for better understanding (56 days+32 days+12 days) and will try to give guidance on what exactly to do in each slot.

Planning for the First slot of 56 Days- REVISION 1 Planning for Next slot of 32 Days- REVISION 2 Planning for Final slot of 12 Days
I have allotted 7 days a subject in this slot of 56 days. You are supposed to complete a subject within a span of 7 days.

This will be your first revision of the subject after completing your coaching/first reading by self-study. This slot of 56 days holds much importance as good planning and execution during these 56 days will help you in next 2 slots.

Some tips and what exactly you are supposed to do in these 56 days:

i) You can adjust these 7 days as per your convenience and can do like finishing 2 subjects in 14 days and allocate more time to one and less to others.

ii) I would suggest to pick 2 subjects and study 2 subjects a day one theory and one practical and complete in 2 weeks.

iii) Must mark important points, prepare short notes, charts, mark important problems and do all things to concise your notes. Make sure that revision number 2 takes half time then what you are taking now.
iv) Summaries and handwritten notes are a must so the focus must be on summaries. By this, I am not saying that you must directly switch to summaries rather first have conceptual understanding and then shift to summary

v) Must solve problems of practical subjects by writing and solving and give A/B/C to problems so that you refer only A and B category problems in next revision.

vi) You must take a print out of syllabus of each subject and divide it into 7 days and plan for each day. Do this exercise today for 2 subjects that you will be starting from 21st July 2020. viii) Good Question Banks are a must for all subjects and reading merely provisions without practising problems are of no use. So must Question bank and mark Important problems while you do first revision.

ix) Concept notebook is highly suggested for subjects like FR, SFM, AMA etc. so that you could revise all concepts one day before the exam as it is impossible to go through all problems.

x) I would also suggest to maintain a small notebook and mention the topics which you will cover the next day and at the end of the next day mention what you covered. This helps in analyzing your performance.
In the first slot of 56 days, you must be done with solving problems, making notes, reading provisions etc. from ICAI material or your class notes. Now you do not have concise notes and important problems have been marked which you will see again.

In this slot, I have allotted 4 days to each subject which is just over half the time you took to complete a subject earlier.

Some tips and what exactly you are supposed to do in these 32 days:

i) Use summary books and handwritten notes to revise the subject again.

ii) Practice A category problems again and go through important points as marked in your study material.

iii) Practice MTPs/RTPs and past attempt papers during these 4 days a subject.

iv) Writing practice of past papers is a must and you must focus on writing practice of past papers. ICAI also conducts mock test papers on their centres and you must make an effort to write these tests.

v) Amendments hold special importance and hence separate notes must be prepared for amendments from RTP issued for your attempt.

Now since May 20 attempt got cancelled, amendments of both attempts would be covered in Nov 20 and hence holds even more importance.

This way you will compile a subject in 4 days’ time which according to me is more than sufficient if you have utilized slot 1 of 56 days well. One Important point that I would like to mention here is that you must use same material which you used in Slot 1 of 56 days as changing material would be suicidal and lead to sheer wastage of time and energy.
This slot of 12 days i.e. 1.5 days a subject can be termed as Semi-final before the final.

As we all know that we get 1.5 days’ time between each paper in the CA Examination and these 1.5 days decides whether you will succeed or not.

But many times, it happens that students fail to revise the entire subject in 1.5 days’ time although they have prepared well during the last 3-4 months.

I would suggest all to revise the subjects during these 1.5 days in a similar fashion as you do before the final examination so that you don’t face any issue during those 1.5 days.

Summaries and handwritten notes will only help during this time and hence more focus must be given to preparing notes and making your notes as concise as possible in Slot No. 1.

Every time you study a particular chapter or a concept, always think of how to make it as concise as possible so that you could revise it one day before the exam.

100 DAYS STUDY PLANNER FOR CA NOV 20 ASPIRANTS APPEARING IN SINGLE GROUP

I have prepared this planner in such a way that this will allow you to complete 3 revisions till exams. You just have to start following from today itself

Number of Days left for exams: Approx. 100 Days (21st July to 31st Oct 2020)

Number of subjects: 4 subjects (Ignoring exemptions and if you have then it’s surplus)

Number of Revisions that must be done: 3 Revisions

I will divide the 100 days into 4 parts here for better understanding (40 days+28 days+20 days+12 days) and will try to give guidance on what exactly to do in each slot.

Planning for the First slot of 40 Days-REVISION 1

I have allotted 10 days a subject in this slot of 40 days. You are supposed to complete a subject within a span of 10 days.

This will be your first revision of the subject after completing your coaching/first reading by self-study. This slot of 40 days holds much importance as good planning and execution during these 40 days will help you in the next 3 slots.
Suggestions would be similar to as suggested to Both Group aspirants for Revision Number 1 which you can refer above.

Planning for Next slot of 28 Days- REVISION 2

We all know there is a concept of a learning curve in CA Final costing and hence students must apply that concept and every revision must take lesser time compared to previous one. Accordingly, Revision No 2 must take 7 days a subject.

Since you have already made concise notes, marked important provisions, marked important problems in Revision no 1 of 40 days, so you must refer those concise notes and important problem in next revision

As already suggested, always do two subjects a day otherwise effectiveness decreases and it gets monotonous.

Since one Group aspirants have a lot of time so they must focus more on the handwritten practice of problems as writing practice will build your confidence
Planning for Next slot of 20 Days- REVISION 3

In this slot, I have allotted 5 days to each subject.

Some tips and what exactly you are supposed to do in these 20 days:
i) Use summary books and handwritten notes to revise the subject again.

ii) Practice A category problems again and go through important points as marked in your study material.

iii) Practice MTPs/RTPs and past attempt papers during these 4 days a subject.

iv) Writing practice of past papers is a must and you must focus on writing practice.

v) Amendments hold special importance and hence separate notes must be prepared for amendments from RTP issued for your attempt.

Planning for Final slot of 12 Days

This slot of 12 days i.e. 3 days a subject can be termed as Semi-final before the final.

As we all know that we get 1.5 days’ time between each paper in the CA Examination and these 1.5 days decides whether you will succeed or not.

But many times, it happens that students fail to revise the entire subject in 1.5 days’ time although they have prepared well during the last 3-4 months.

I would suggest all to revise the subjects during these 3 days in a similar fashion as you do before the final examination so that you don’t face any issue during those 1.5 days. I would strongly advice to stick with the same notes and material during all the three slots and changing your notes would be suicidal.

In this blog, I have tried to give some guidance as to how you should plan for the next 100 days whether you are giving a single group or both groups. I hope this will help you in your preparation. As already suggested the decision of single group v/s both groups is a big decision and hence must be made wisely. Once you have made your mind, then make a proper plan on paper as studying without planning is a sheer waste of time.

Allocate time to revisions as suggested above and stick to it. Divide syllabus of a subject into smaller parts and plan for each day and finish within the time allocated as above. If you follow the schedule with 100% dedication then surely it will help a lot.

All the Best for your Exam. Happy Studying!!
